International Conference on Population & Development (ICPD) + 5

Fiji's family planning programme is widely cited as a success, and credited with causing fertility rates to be halved since the early 1960s. These claims are inflated. While the availability of contraceptives has undoubtedly helped to lower fertility, more pervasive agents have been economic and social changes which have transformed the life-experiences of women and complicated their decisions about child-bearing. This article looks into the different issues and themes surrounding sexual and reproductive health and rights in Fiji such as diseases affecting women’s reproductive organs, overweight and obesity, sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s), HIV/AIDS, infertility, pregnancies among unmarried teenagers, forms of physical and sexual abuse and social and economic conditions. Read about it in Taking up the Cairo Challenge – Country Study of Fiji.
