Khawar Mumtaz has been working on gender issues, human rights and the environement for more than three decades. She has worked in different capacities in her long and distinguished career – serving in the UNFPA Advisory Panel on Gender Development, Steering Committee of the International Irrigation Management Institute, and numerous others.  She has participated in numerous workshops/seminars within and outside Pakistan. She was closely involved in the UNCED, ICPD and FWCW processes, as well as the IUCN congress.

Aside from being a renowned Pakistani development activist, Khawar is also a widely published and respected researcher and writer. She has won the Prime Minister Award for ‘Women in Pakistan: Two Steps Forward One Step Back?’, a book she has co-authored. She was also nominated the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005, as one of the collectively nominated 1000 women from around the world.

Khawar is currently the Executive Director of Shirkat Gah, Women’s Resource Centre, an NGO that deals with women’s sexual and reproductive health and rights in Lahore, Pakistan.
